Participants to the network cover a wide range of expertise including (molecular and morphological) taxonomy, genetics, physiology and life cycle studies, phytoplankton and phytobenthos (both micro- and macroalgae) ecology, theoretical ecology of plankton and benthos systems and algal toxin chemistry.

Community structure of phototrophic biofilms in waste water treatment plants and on stone monuments. Toxic blooms of cyanobacteria and microalgae in lakes and coastal areas, with application of sensors to determine phycotoxins and nutrients in field samples. Bastianini Mauro

Researcher at Istituto Scienze Marine, CNR, Venice. Phytoplankton ecology, special focus on taxonomy and ecology of toxic and bloom causing species within regional monitoring activity and national and international projects (“UNESCO-Ecosistema Lagunare Veneziano”, 1992-1994; “PRISMA”; “Interreg III; OBAS”). Beran Alfred

Researcher at "Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e Geofisica Sperimentale", Trieste. Biology of protists; taxonomy ecology and physiology of unicellular organisms, including auto-, mixo- and heterotrophic species. Cultivation of dinoflagellates, ciliates and other forms. Curator of culture collections, which comprises Adriatic isolates of Alexandrium minutum, A. tamutum, A. pseudogonyaulax, A. taylori and several strains of Ostreopsis cfr. ovata and Coolia monotis. Recently his interest extended to study the effect of physico-chemical factors on the morphological and physiological diversity among strains of Prorocentrum minimum and Ostreopsis cfr. ovata.

Ceccherelli Giulia

Researcher at University of Sassari. Expertise on ecology and statistics of the Mediterranean macrophyta communities. She attended several specialistic courses on statistical methods for the seaweed community studies. In the 2001 year she organized an International scientific course on the “Design and analysis of ecological experiments” by Prof. AJ Underwood and Dr. MG Chapman (University of Sydney). She is responsible and coordinator of the research Project titled: ”Disturbance and recovery of the Mediterranean seagrass (Posidonia oceanica L. Delile) meadows: an experimental evaluation of anchor damage” supported by the PADI FOUNDATION, California, U.S.A.

Tubaro Aurelia

Full professor at the University of Trieste. Research activity on the evaluation of the pharmacological and toxicological properties, of natural products and on finding the relevant active or toxic principles. In particular since 1989, she is active in the algal toxin field mainly focusing on the algal detection test development and the evaluation of the toxicological properties of algal toxins. From 2006 she is chairing the “Palytoxin and Ostreocins” working Group of the Presidentail Task Force of AOAC. In 2007 she was invited as a toxicological expert in the “Working Group on Palytoxin” of the European Community. From 1995 she is included in the International directory of experts in toxic and harmful algae of UNESCO.
